Measles-linked deaths in Bangladesh climb to 698

Nine more children have died with symptoms consistent with measles in the 24 hours to 8:00am on Thursday, taking Bangladesh’s combined total of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths to 698.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest fatalities have been classified as suspected measles deaths. The number of suspected measles-related deaths has now reached 605, while the number of laboratory-confirmed deaths remained unchanged at 93.

The health authority reported 893 new suspected measles cases during the same period, bringing the nationwide total of suspected infections to 96,653.

A further 52 laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded, raising the total number of confirmed measles infections to 11,442.

DGHS data showed that 80,497 people with suspected measles have been admitted to hospitals across the country since 10 April. Of those, 76,788 have recovered.
