The government is hopeful of securing the return of the accused in the Osman Hadi murder case from India, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Friday.
Speaking to reporters after attending a meeting at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, he said the Indian authorities had arrested three suspects in the case and they were believed to be in Kolkata.
"A case has been filed against them with a court as per the law. We have already sent the necessary documents related to the case, as per the agreement, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," he said.
"We are waiting and hoping to get them back. Besides, we will be able to submit the charge sheet after completing the investigation into the case," he added.
The minister was speaking after a programme marking the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026.
Responding to a question about former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed, Salahuddin Ahmed said the Federal Police of Abu Dhabi had informed the Bangladesh government of his arrest in the United Arab Emirates by email.
He said the UAE authorities requested case-related documents within 30 days. Bangladesh prepared the required documents within three days and sent them through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"We have not been informed about the Benazir issue by the UAE government yet. But we hope that we will be informed very soon," he said.
Asked about the border situation, the home minister said Bangladesh had not allowed a single person to be pushed across the border and that Border Guard Bangladesh remained on alert.
"We have made a diplomatic call to India that if any Bangladeshi is there, India can provide a list through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs," he said.
He added that Bangladesh would verify the information and take the necessary steps once India provided the list.
