The government is investigating whether the display of flags bearing the Islamic declaration of faith, known as the Kalima, in Arabic at different locations across Bangladesh is part of an organised campaign, Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman said on Tuesday.
He made the remarks at a press conference held at the Press Information Department conference room at the Secretariat, where he briefed journalists on the progress of various government activities.
Responding to a question about the appearance of the flags in different parts of the country, the adviser said the government had taken the matter seriously and was examining its origins.
“I won’t go into details, but the government has taken cognisance of the matter and is looking into it. There is no reason to believe the government has any connection with this. Rather, the government is investigating why this is happening, as there is a possibility that it could send the wrong message globally in some cases. We are aware of the issue,” he said.
He added that the government intended to take appropriate action once the investigation was complete. “Personally, I have also drawn the Home Adviser’s attention to it. We hope this will not continue in this manner,” he said.
Asked who might be behind the display of the flags, Dr Zahed Ur Rahman said it would be premature to identify those responsible before the investigation was concluded.
“You can understand who may be behind it and why it is being done. You will see some people talking about it on social media, but they may not necessarily be the main individuals involved. So, this needs to be investigated. Since it has become so widespread, there is certainly some specific planning behind it. That is what we are looking into, and, insha’Allah, we will be able to identify those responsible,” he said.
