Dhaka Metropolitan Police has expanded its AI-based traffic camera network to 19 major intersections across the capital, with four new cameras installed on Tuesday, Police Commissioner Musleh Uddin Ahmed said.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating an AI traffic camera at Lake Road under the Tejgaon Traffic Division, the commissioner said the technology would be introduced gradually at other key intersections across the city to strengthen traffic management and improve road safety.
He said around 1,500 traffic cases have so far been filed using the AI camera system. The amount of fines varies according to the nature of each offence, while updated information on total collections is maintained by the traffic division.
The commissioner said vehicle owners found violating traffic laws are notified through multiple channels. In addition to text messages, prosecution notices are sent by post to the registered owners. SMS alerts are issued from designated Dhaka Metropolitan Police Traffic Division numbers, while details of the cases are also published on the DMP traffic portal and official website.
Responding to a question about notices being sent to previous owners when vehicle ownership has not been formally transferred after a sale, he said around 38,000 summonses have been issued so far.
On the issue of battery-operated auto-rickshaws, Musleh Uddin Ahmed said enforcement drives were continuing, although removing all such vehicles from Dhaka's roads immediately was not feasible.
He said the Ministry of Home Affairs and Dhaka Metropolitan Police had taken a policy decision on battery-operated auto-rickshaws and were working with relevant stakeholders to implement it. Necessary measures would be introduced gradually under a coordinated plan.
Earlier, while inaugurating the new AI camera, the commissioner said the technology had been installed at major intersections and accident-prone locations to improve traffic control and enhance road safety.
“As a result, there has been unprecedented and visible improvement in traffic management. It has created a positive tendency among drivers to stay within designated lanes and comply with traffic signals,” he said.
He added that the combined use of traffic diversions and modern signal lights was laying the foundation for transforming Dhaka into a modern, smart city.
“We are committed to maintaining this momentum and have adopted stricter, technology-driven measures to enforce traffic laws,” he said.
