The Bangladesh government has approved a policy decision to expand policing across the Purbachal New Town Project by establishing four police stations, six investigation centres and two police lines as authorities prepare for the area’s continued growth.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir announced the decision on Wednesday while inaugurating the newly built Borkau Police Camp at the RAJUK Central Mechanical Stack Yard within the Purbachal New Town Project.
He said, "The expansion is intended to strengthen law and order in one of the country’s largest planned residential developments, where population and infrastructure continue to grow.”
According to the IGP, work is also progressing to establish three deputy commissioner offices, while authorities are moving ahead with plans to set up 41 police boxes across different sectors of the township.
The opening of the Borkau Police Camp marks the beginning of formal police operations within the Purbachal New Town Project.
Ali Hossain also said, “the new facility is expected to improve public safety and support the government’s vision of developing Purbachal into a modern, well-planned and secure urban area.”
He added that the Ministry of Home Affairs has already granted administrative approval for the proposed police stations and investigation centres, recognising the increasing need for law enforcement services in the expanding residential project.
To support the initiative, the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK) has approved the phased allocation of 29.21 acres of land for Bangladesh Police. Registration has already been completed for 18.63 acres, while the remaining land is currently undergoing the legal registration process.
“There are plans to bring the Purbachal New Town Project under the jurisdiction of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) by creating a separate police division similar to existing DMP divisions. If implemented, the division would be overseen by an Additional Police Commissioner,” IGP added.
The proposal also includes the creation of around 6,524 police posts to meet the long-term policing needs of the rapidly developing township.
The IGP further mentioned, "The stronger police presence would help speed up development activities, improve public confidence and enhance overall security in the area.”
He expressed hope that the Pushi Police Camp would be inaugurated within the next two months, adding that further police stations and investigation centres would be established in phases.
The inauguration ceremony was chaired by Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed and attended by senior police officials, local representatives and members of the media.
