Bangladesh’s National Parliament Speaker, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, has reaffirmed Dhaka’s support for peace and diplomacy during a meeting with Iranian speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in Tehran.
The meeting took place on Friday while the Bangladeshi delegation was visiting Iran to attend the state funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Speaker Ghalibaf warmly welcomed Mr Ahmad and the delegation to Iran and thanked them for attending the funeral ceremony.
During the meeting, Hafiz Uddin conveyed the condolences of the government and people of Bangladesh over Khamenei’s death and expressed solidarity with Iran during its period of national mourning. He also condemned the killing of the late Iranian leader.
The Bangladeshi speaker highlighted the long-standing friendship between Bangladesh and Iran, pointing to the two countries’ shared cultural heritage and longstanding people-to-people ties.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin also acknowledged Speaker Ghalibaf’s role in supporting the recent peace memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States.
He said, “he hoped the agreement would contribute to lasting peace, stability and prosperity for both the Iranian people and the wider region.”
Reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy, he expressed support for the ongoing peace process and said all parties should continue working towards a lasting settlement of unresolved issues through peaceful negotiations.
The meeting also focused on strengthening parliamentary and bilateral relations.
Hafiz invited Speaker Ghalibaf to make an official visit to Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time.
The Bangladeshi parliamentary delegation arrived in Tehran on Thursday to attend the state funeral. They were received at the airport by Hamid Reza Haji Babaei, who welcomed the delegation on behalf of the Iranian parliament.
The visit reflects the continuing diplomatic engagement between Bangladesh and Iran at a time when both countries have expressed support for regional stability and peaceful dialogue.
