The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced heightened security measures at public venues showing FIFA World Cup matches on large screens across the capital following a deadly incident linked to football celebrations.
Speaking at a media briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Friday, Additional Commissioner (Detective Branch) Md Shafiqul Islam said every police station under the DMP had been instructed to identify locations where World Cup matches are being broadcast on big screens and to maintain a visible security presence.
He said local police had also been directed to work closely with event organisers to help prevent violence or any other unwanted incidents during the tournament.
The move follows a fatal clash in Dhaka’s Adabar area on the night of 29 June.
According to police, an argument began after a group of young football supporters celebrated Brazil’s victory over Japan by beating drums and blowing whistles.
Police said the dispute initially involved a man identified as Habib, who allegedly assaulted a young man named Nirob. The confrontation later escalated into a violent attack in which local BNP leader Md Abul Bashar Badsha, 45, was hacked to death. Another party leader, Md Saddam Hossain, 35, was injured.
Investigators have arrested seven people in connection with the killing and the investigation remains ongoing.
Referring to the incident, Shafiqul Islam said police were closely monitoring public football screening venues across the city to ensure spectators could enjoy the matches safely.
He also appealed to supporters of all teams to celebrate responsibly and respect those backing rival sides.
“Football is a game of wins and losses. Everyone should be able to enjoy the tournament while respecting the views and support of others,” he added.
The DMP hopes the increased police presence and coordination with organisers will help ensure that World Cup celebrations across Dhaka remain peaceful throughout the competition.
