Narayanganj district police have arrested two men accused of producing and selling altered versions of the country’s national flag bearing the Kalima in Arabic script.
The arrests were made on Thursday night in the Siddhirganj area, and the suspects were later sent to court on Friday after being formally shown as arrested, according to local police.
The two men have been identified as 25-year-old Md Niyamok Ullah, from Sarail upazila in Brahmanbaria, and 26-year-old Siddique, from Sherpur Sadar.
Siddhirganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Emdadul Haque confirmed the arrests, saying that investigators believe the pair had been manufacturing the modified flags in the Mitali Market area before advertising and selling them through an online page.
Police said that the altered flags, which featured the Arabic Kalima alongside the design of Bangladesh’s national flag, had recently been displayed in several parts of Siddhirganj. Their appearance prompted officers to launch an investigation.
The OC said again, "The inquiry is focused not only on the production and distribution of the flags but also on establishing whether there was any broader intention behind the activity.”
Police have not announced any additional arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities have yet to disclose how many altered flags were produced or sold or whether further legal action will be taken against anyone else connected to the alleged operation.
