Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended a memorial ceremony in Dhaka on Saturday to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the July mass uprising of 2024.
The event began at 10:00 am BST local time at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, where families of the victims, participants in the movement and political figures gathered to mark the second anniversary of the uprising.
The programme was jointly organised by the July 24 Martyrs’ Family Society and Amra July Joddha as part of nationwide commemorations marking what organisers describe as the “36 July” movement.
The ceremony honoured those killed during the unrest and recognised the sacrifices made by victims and their families.
Organisers said the event forms part of a broader series of activities taking place across the country to remember the events of July 2024.
The Prime Minister is also expected to attend a student rally at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on 3 August. He has been invited to join the gathering as chief guest on the final day of a nine-day programme commemorating the second anniversary of the uprising.
The programme was announced on Thursday by the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The memorial events are being held to remember those who died during the July 2024 movement and to reflect on its significance in Bangladesh’s recent political history.
