BGB foils BSF nightlong Push-In attempt at Chapainawabganj border

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said its personnel, supported by local residents, prevented an alleged attempt by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to force 12 people across the international border in Chapainawabganj late on Friday.

According to BGB officials, the incident unfolded at around 11:00 pm near the Chawkpara Border Outpost (BOP) in Shibganj upazila, opposite the Musalmanpara area on the Indian side of the frontier.

Residents living near the border said they became aware of an alleged attempt by BSF personnel to move a group of 12 men and women towards Bangladesh.

After receiving the information, BGB members were deployed to the area, while hundreds of local people gathered near the border in support of the security forces.

Officials said, "The group remained approximately 600 yards inside Indian territory during the incident. BGB alleged that BSF had switched off border security lights before making the attempt, prompting the border guards to take up defensive positions based on prior intelligence.”

According to BGB, the combined presence of border guards and local residents prevented the group from crossing into Bangladesh.

The force said, “BSF subsequently withdrew the individuals back into Indian territory.”

Security was further reinforced along the border overnight to guard against any additional attempts, BGB added.

At around 4:30am on Saturday, BSF reportedly transported the 12 people by vehicle to a holding centre in India’s Malda district.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, commanding officer of the Mahananda Battalion (59 BGB), confirmed the incident.

There has been no immediate response from India’s Border Security Force regarding the allegations.
