Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has told his security teams to make sure their protection does not cut him off from the general public. He said the trust and love of the people are his biggest strength as a leader.
Speaking at the 51st anniversary event of the President Guard Regiment (PGR) at Dhaka Cantonment on Sunday morning, Tarique Rahman explained the need for a careful balance. He asked the guards to plan their security in a way that keeps him safe but does not build a wall between him and the citizens.
“I want to maintain my trust and reliance on the confidence and affection of the people as the head of a democratic government,” he said. He then asked the guards to make sure their rules do not push him away from the public.
The Prime Minister pointed out that he recently gave the same message to the Special Security Force (SSF) during their own anniversary event. Because both the SSF and the PGR share the important job of protecting top state leaders, he believes they should follow the same rules.
As the head of government, Tarique Rahman often goes to large public meetings and official events. These visits take him all over the country, from the busy capital to very quiet, faraway areas. He knows that keeping him safe at such large gatherings is a difficult job.
To solve this, Tarique Rahman asked the PGR to come up with new security plans that work well but are also thoughtful. He stressed that while his physical safety is critical, the guards must also make sure that normal life is not upset and that everyday people do not feel far away from their leader.
