Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered government departments to work together immediately to save the lakes in Gulshan, Banani, and Baridhara from heavy pollution.
During a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office, the government reviewed the poor condition of the water and the sewerage systems in these upscale areas. The Prime Minister made it clear that city corporations, ministries, and development agencies must coordinate to clean out the waste and bring life back to the lakes.
One of the biggest problems discussed at the meeting is that many residential and commercial buildings are emptying their dirty toilet and kitchen water directly into the lakes. Officials said that stopping this untreated sewage from entering the water is the most urgent step needed to resolve the problem.
To solve this long-term, the government plan focuses heavily on building a proper Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). This plant will clean the dirty water before it ever reaches the lakes. City workers will also regularly clear out accumulated trash from the canals to keep the water flowing naturally.
“The Prime Minister wants an end to standalone efforts that do not work,” Deputy Press Secretary Mostafa Zulfiquar Hasan said after the meeting. “To save these lakes, every department must work as one team.”
The new clean-up plan includes quick fixes, medium-term goals, and long-term projects. Along with checking the big apartment buildings, officials are also looking at ways to stop trash and liquid waste from the nearby Korail slum from sliding directly into the water.
The meeting was attended by high-level leaders, including Housing Minister Zakaria Taher, Local Government State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, and the heads of both Dhaka North and South City Corporations, alongside the Chairman of RAJUK, Engineer Md Reazul Islam.
