Two children were killed in separate landslides in Chattogram city and Sitakunda upazila on Wednesday as continuous heavy rainfall triggered the collapse of hillslopes onto homes.
The first victim, 12-year-old Sumaiya Akter, died after a large mass of earth collapsed onto a house at the foot of a hill in Mayor Goli under Sholokbahar ward at around 1 pm.
Sub-Inspector Riazul Saleheen of Panchlaish Police Station said six houses had been built at the base of the hill in Muktijoddha Colony. Part of the hillside collapsed onto two of the houses, trapping the girl beneath the debris.
Fire Service personnel, assisted by local residents, carried out a rescue operation and recovered Sumaiya. She was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
In a separate incident at around 10:00 am, 10-month-old Ashraful Islam Tanvir, son of Mohin Uddin, was killed when a large section of earth collapsed onto a makeshift house in the Jangal Salimpur area of Sitakunda upazila.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Junayet Kawsar said the earthen house had been built beside a hill and was crushed after part of the slope gave way due to the heavy rainfall.
The latest fatalities came a day after Shafiqul Islam was killed in another landslide in the Panchlaish area of Chattogram city on Tuesday.
