Floodwaters have gone down in about 80 per cent of Chattogram, according to the city’s mayor. The news comes after days of heavy flooding that trapped people in their homes and blocked roads across the busy port city.
The mayor, Dr Shahadat Hossain, shared the update on Friday after visiting some of the hardest-hit areas. The mayor said that the city has put all its efforts into clearing the water quickly and fixing the blocked drains.
However, the problem is not completely solved yet. “Some low-lying parts of the city are still underwater,” Dr Shahadat Hossain said, explaining that lower areas are taking much longer to dry out.
During the visit, Member of Parliament Ershad Ullah joined the mayor. Together, they visited flooded neighbourhoods such as Chandgaon Hajirpole, Chandgaon Residential Area, Balurtal, Ananya Residential, and Shamsherpara. They wanted to see the damage for themselves and check on the people living there.
During the visit, they handed out food and relief items to families who needed help. The leaders also talked to the locals to find out exactly why the water was trapped, where the drains were blocked, and what needed to be done to resolve the issue permanently.
Dr Shahadat Hossain mentioned that city workers are now teaming up with local residents. Their goal is to find the spots where the water is moving too slowly so they can clear out the trash and mud blocking the path.
Lawmaker Ershad Ullah promised that the government is standing firmly with the public during this tough time. The MP assured residents that the government will continue to provide food, support, and care until every family has recovered.
