Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has inaugurated DMC Day 2026, marking the 80th founding anniversary of Dhaka Medical College (DMC), one of Bangladesh’s oldest and most prominent medical institutions.
The ceremony began at 10:00am on Saturday at the college campus, where the Prime Minister formally opened the celebrations by releasing balloons and pigeons.
He was joined by his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, who studied at the institution and now serves as Vice-President of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation.
As part of the anniversary programme, the Prime Minister and Dr Zubaida Rahman planted two saplings, an Arjun tree and a Neem tree, on the campus, symbolising the institution’s continued growth and commitment to future generations.
Following the tree plantation, a special munajat was offered in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the July Movement, with prayers for the eternal peace of the departed.
The Prime Minister later received a briefing on plans to strengthen student accommodation at Dhaka Medical College.
Chief Engineer of the Health Engineering Department, Brigadier General Mir Sarwar Hossain Chowdhury, outlined progress on a government project to construct two new female dormitories as part of a wider initiative to build 19 modern hostel buildings for medical students.
During the presentation, Tarique Rahman sought further details about the project, asking officials about the facilities and services that students would receive once the new accommodation is completed.
Several senior government officials and healthcare leaders attended the event, including Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain, State Minister for Health Dr M A Muhit, the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Health Dr S M Ziauddin Haider, the Prime Minister’s Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman, Health Services Secretary Md Kamruzzaman Chowdhury, BNP Health Affairs Secretary Prof Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, President of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) Prof Dr Harun Al Rashid, Director General of the Directorate General of Medical Education Prof Dr Nazmul Hossain and Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services Prof Dr Pravath Chandra Biswas.
Dhaka Medical College was established on 10 July 1946, initially operating from the then Secretariat building and the Faculty of Arts of the University of Dhaka. Since then, it has played a central role in medical education and healthcare services in Bangladesh, producing generations of physicians and specialists.
The institution observes DMC Day each year to commemorate its establishment. This year’s celebration marks the completion of its 80-year journey as the college begins its 81st year.
