Tourist travel closed across Bandarban until 15 July

The Bandarban district administration has ordered the temporary closure of all tourist attractions until 15 July as persistent heavy rainfall continues to increase the risk of flooding, landslides and other weather-related hazards.

The decision was announced on Friday through a public notice signed by Deputy Commissioner Md Saniul Ferdous, who said the measure had been taken to protect visitors and local residents during the ongoing spell of severe weather.

Under the directive, access to all tourist destinations, waterfalls, hill trekking routes, river transport routes, remote locations and other areas considered vulnerable has been suspended.

Visitors, travel operators and members of the public have been urged not to travel to these locations until the restrictions are lifted.

Officials have also called on residents to follow safety instructions and remain alert while adverse weather conditions continue across the hill district.

Bandarban has experienced four consecutive days of heavy rainfall, causing widespread disruption to daily life. Rising water levels in the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers have exceeded danger levels, increasing the threat of further flooding in low-lying areas.

Transport links have been severely affected, with road communication between Bandarban and the neighbouring districts of Chattogram, Rangamati and Cox’s Bazar interrupted by floodwater and landslides. Several roads within the district have become impassable, while water transport services have also been suspended.

Local authorities said at least 2,100 people displaced by the flooding have taken refuge in 220 emergency shelters established across the district.

Relief operations are continuing as government agencies work to support those affected.

The district administration, Bandarban Municipality, the Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are distributing emergency assistance, including dry food, cooked meals and other essential supplies to families in flood-hit communities.

Authorities have not indicated when normal tourism activities will resume, saying the restrictions will remain in place until weather conditions improve and it is considered safe for visitors to return. Residents and travellers have been advised to monitor official updates before planning any journey to the district.
