Bangladesh has recorded three more deaths linked to symptoms consistent with measles, taking the combined number of confirmed and suspected fatalities from the outbreak to 753, according to the latest figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The health authority said the deaths occurred during the 24-hour period ending at 8:00am on Saturday. All three have been classified as suspected measles-related deaths while investigations continue.
The latest update means the number of suspected measles deaths has increased to 660. The number of laboratory-confirmed deaths remains unchanged at 93, bringing the overall death toll associated with the outbreak to 753.
The DGHS also reported 702 new suspected measles cases over the same period.
This has raised the cumulative number of suspected infections recorded nationwide to 110,601.
Laboratory testing confirmed a further 84 measles infections, taking the total number of confirmed cases since the outbreak began to 13,410.
Health officials said hospitals across the country have admitted 93,491 patients with suspected measles since 15 March. Of those, 89,762 have recovered and been discharged, reflecting a high recovery rate despite the continued spread of the disease.
The latest figures indicate that measles remains a significant public health challenge in Bangladesh, with new suspected infections continuing to be reported each day.
Health authorities are continuing surveillance, laboratory testing and patient management as they monitor the outbreak and respond to new cases.
The DGHS has continued to publish daily updates on infections, hospital admissions and fatalities as it tracks the progression of the outbreak across the country.
Public health officials are urging continued vigilance while monitoring the situation closely.
