Bangladesh is developing four new textbooks for primary and secondary school students for the upcoming 2027 academic year.
Dr Mahdi Amin, the Prime Minister's Adviser on Education, explained that these books will reflect Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's long-term vision to reform and modernise the country’s school system.
The announcement was made during a workshop held at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka to finalise the layout of the new books.
The event brought together several top government officials. National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) Chairman Professor Mohammad Fakhrul Maola led the meeting, while Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon attended as the chief guest. State ministers from the cultural, youth, sports, and mass education sectors also joined the strategy session.
Dr Amin emphasised that the new textbooks will move away from old, traditional styles. Instead, the government wants to focus heavily on "Learning with Happiness", sports, and cultural education to make school more engaging.
To make the books more attractive to students, the adviser pointed out that existing schoolbooks rely too much on long paragraphs of text. He suggested adding far more visual elements, such as colourful photographs, charts, diagrams, and illustrations, so children can enjoy what they are studying.
The new curriculum will also address technical and vocational education. Dr Amin noted that many talented students currently avoid technical fields, even though basic technical skills are highly valuable for their careers. To change this, the government will build proper science and tech laboratories in schools and add motivational chapters to the textbooks to encourage students to explore technical paths.
The adviser also addressed historical accuracy in school books. He stated that the government’s main goal is to present history objectively and truthfully. He clarified that the administration does not need to rewrite history to match personal political preferences, and the books will only reflect factual truths based on impartial analysis.
The government is on a tight schedule to ensure that all students receive their new books on time for the new year.
To distribute the materials by January 1, the NCTB must print, publish, and prepare roughly 31 crore (310 million) textbooks by mid-November. This timeline gives distribution teams a full month to ship the books safely to schools across the country.
