At least 51 people have died in Bangladesh after days of heavy rain triggered dangerous flash floods and landslides. Local emergency services said that the coastal area of Cox’s Bazar has seen the highest number of deaths.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief shared new details showing that the disaster has affected more than one million people. Rescue teams estimate that about 268,000 families are completely cut off by the rising water across seven hard-hit districts.

The heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding that has damaged local roads and homes. Official numbers show that 58 Upazilas (local sub-districts) have been badly damaged. The worst areas include Chattogram, Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Moulvibazar, and Habiganj.

The flooding has spread through 386 local villages and 11 towns across these seven districts. Because the water is so high, it has blocked major roads and made it very difficult for rescue teams to reach people. Government workers are trying to send food and clean water to the flooded areas, but the deep water is making it hard to help the most isolated families.
