Large parts of Bangladesh are bracing for heavy rain as a strong monsoon season moves across the country.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department warned on Monday that six major regions will likely see big downpours. Weather experts say the heavy rain could cause sudden pooling of water on streets, especially in busy city areas.
The affected areas include the divisions of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet. According to the official weather warning, the heavy rain started at 11:00 am on Monday and is expected to last for at least twenty-four hours.
Weather officials have broken down how much rain to expect:
Heavy Rain: Between 44mm and 88mm of rain within a single day.
Very Heavy Rain: More than 88mm of rain within twenty-four hours in some places.
This amount of water is expected to cause temporary street flooding in and around the capital, Dhaka. Because the water will have nowhere to go quickly, city drains will face heavy pressure, which could slow down traffic and disrupt daily life for commuters.
Local authorities are keeping a close eye on the situation as the rain continues to move across the country.
