The Speaker of Parliament, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, returned to Dhaka early on Thursday morning after a short official visit to Qatar. The main purpose of his trip was to deliver a message of sympathy from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to the leader of Qatar.

The message was sent following the death of the former leader of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who was the father of the country’s current ruler. Hafiz Uddin Ahmad arrived back at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at around 3:00 am on Thursday.

The speaker had travelled to the capital city of Doha on 14 July to show Bangladesh’s support during this sad time. During his meeting with the current leader, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad handed over the official letter from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

While giving the letter, the speaker shared the deep sadness of the government and the people of Bangladesh with the leader and the Qatari royal family. He expressed his support for the country and offered prayers for the former leader.

After delivering the prime minister’s message, the Speaker also met with the head of Qatar’s parliament council, Hassan bin Abdullah al-Ghanim. According to a statement from the Parliament Secretariat, the two leaders held a meeting to discuss shared interests before the Speaker left for Dhaka.
