Two journalists have been killed in a road accident in Dhaka after a bus collided with their motorcycle as they were travelling home from watching the Argentina-England FIFA World Cup semi-final.
The crash happened in the early hours of Thursday near the Jasim Uddin Bus Stand in Sector 3 of Uttara, one of the capital’s busiest transport corridors.
The victims were identified as Rabiul Alam Raju, a journalist with Praner Bangladesh, and Sakibul Hasan, who worked for Sangbad Diganta.
According to initial information, the pair were riding a motorcycle when they were struck by a bus on the stretch of road between the Jasim Uddin intersection and the Rajlakshmi area. They had been returning home after watching the World Cup semi-final.
Both men suffered severe injuries in the collision. They were taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead shortly after their arrival.
Police said an investigation is under way to establish the exact circumstances of the crash. Officers are also attempting to identify the bus involved.
Mohammad Khalid Monsur, Officer-in-Charge of Uttara West Police Station, confirmed the incident and said investigators were collecting evidence as part of the inquiry.
The deaths have added to growing concerns over road safety in Bangladesh, where traffic accidents continue to claim lives despite ongoing efforts to improve enforcement and road management. Authorities have not yet announced whether any suspects have been identified or detained in connection with the incident.
