Tokyo embassy commemorates on July martyrs’ day

The Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo observed July Martyrs’ Day 2026 with due solemnity, paying rich tributes to the students and citizens who lost their lives during the historic July Mass Uprising.

During the commemoration service at the embassy's conference hall, Bangladesh Ambassador to Japan Md. Daud Ali pledged the mission's absolute support in rebuilding the state according to the democratic dreams of the fallen heroes.

The memorial event opened with a solemn one-minute silence to honour the memory of the dead. Embassy officials lowered the national flag to half-mast as a traditional sign of deep respect, followed by the reading out of official state messages issued by the president and the prime minister to mark the national occasion.

Ambassador Daud Ali spoke at length about the history of the July Mass Uprising, praising the immense bravery displayed by the young generation. The diplomat particularly highlighted the ultimate sacrifice of student leader Abu Sayeed, whose courageous, unarmed stand against authoritarian police rule in Rangpur became the defining spark of the popular revolution.

The ambassador noted that the mass uprising had cleared a path to transform the country, opening up a rare window of opportunity to establish true equity, transparent governance, and basic human rights. He stressed that the country has finally moved past an era overshadowed by fascism, institutional corruption, and unlawful state disappearances.

The envoy also stated that the return of a fair, transparent electoral process has restored the democratic rights of the people to choose their own leaders. He described this fresh political atmosphere as a powerful symbol of renewed hope and energy for national development.

Expressing complete faith in the dedication of the current administration, the ambassador assured the community that the Tokyo embassy will work tirelessly to assist every state reform project aimed at building a fairer society.

The memorial gathering concluded with special community prayers asking for eternal peace for the souls of all the martyrs, a complete recovery for the thousands injured during the street protests, and long-term harmony and prosperity for the nation.
