The flood situation in the hard-hit districts of Sylhet and Sunamganj is expected to get better over the next few days. According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), water levels in the local rivers are finally starting to drop because heavy rains have stopped and less water is rushing down from India.
On Thursday, 16 July, the centre reported that the Kushiara River is still flowing above the danger line—by 31 centimetres at Fenchuganj in Sylhet and 19 centimetres at Markuli in Sunamganj. However, experts say the water at both of these points is expected to go down steadily over the next three days.
An official from the flood warning centre explained that while a low-pressure weather system has formed over the sea, it is not expected to bring heavy rain to these two districts over the next three days. With the Surma River also continuing to fall, the flood situation in low-lying areas should show real improvement within the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, other rivers in the country are showing different changes. The water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma rivers rose over the past 24 hours. Experts believe these rivers will keep rising for the next five days, but they are expected to stay safely below the danger line.
In other parts of the northeast, including the Mymensingh division, smaller rivers like the Manu and Khowai rose slightly but are forecast to go down over the next three days. In the north, rivers like the Teesta and Dharla in the Rangpur Division are already falling and will likely keep going down through the weekend.
Down south in the Barishal and Khulna divisions, coastal rivers are flowing normally below the danger mark. Although the tides might be a little higher than usual for the next three days, local conditions remain safe and stable.
