The government has defended its record after completing its first five months in office, stressing that strengthening democratic institutions, stabilising the economy and improving public services remain at the centre of its agenda.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in Tejgaon on Saturday, PMO spokesperson and Prime Minister’s adviser Dr Mahdi Amin said the administration had continuously worked to promote transparency, good governance and public welfare while seeking to meet the expectations of voters.
The event, organised by the Prime Minister’s Press Wing, marked five months since the elected government took office after the national election.
Mahdi stated that although the administration has served for only around five months, every day is an opportunity to deliver on the promises made to the public.
He mentioned that democratic governments are judged not only by the length of their tenure but also by their ability to demonstrate responsibility, accountability and public service on a daily basis.
“The confidence and trust of the people are the greatest strengths of any government,” he continued, adding that the administration considers it a responsibility to keep citizens informed about its policies, reforms, achievements and the challenges it faces.
According to the PMO spokesperson, rebuilding democratic institutions and maintaining economic stability have been among the government’s immediate priorities since taking office through a public mandate.
He explained that efforts have focused on containing the prices of essential commodities, restoring discipline in the banking and financial sectors, recovering funds allegedly moved abroad illegally and reviewing development projects to ensure greater efficiency and reduce corruption.
Mahdi also stated that the government is continuing programmes to support communities affected by recent flooding while rebuilding health and education facilities damaged during recent unrest.
He added that these initiatives form part of a broader effort to establish an inclusive and prosperous Bangladesh where opportunities are available without discrimination.
Concluding the briefing, the PMO spokesperson remarked that the government intends to build on the progress achieved during its first five months and remains committed to pursuing reforms aimed at strengthening governance and improving the lives of citizens.
