The High Court has asked the authorities to explain why female mortuary attendants should not be appointed to carry out post-mortem examinations on the bodies of women.
The order was issued on Sunday by a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Ashif Hasan after hearing a public interest writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Md Monir Uddin.
The court issued a rule directing the respondents to submit their responses within two weeks.
Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Advocate Md Monir Uddin said the court had sought an explanation from the relevant authorities on the matter and had fixed a two-week deadline for their reply.
The petition was lodged with the High Court on 13 July, requesting judicial directions for the appointment of female mortuary attendants to conduct autopsies on women.
The respondents will now be required to explain why such a measure should not be introduced, after which the court is expected to consider the next steps in the proceedings.
The case forms part of a public interest challenge seeking judicial consideration of existing practices surrounding post-mortem examinations involving female bodies in Bangladesh.
