The Prime Minister's Defence Adviser, Brigadier General (retired) AKM Shamsul Islam, has called for a major technological shift in national weather forecasting to protect the public from severe environmental hazards.
The security lead made these statements while visiting the main headquarters of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department in the capital. Officials say the push for modern prediction tools is crucial for protecting lives and securing the agricultural output of the country.
During a tour of the central complex in Agargaon, AKM Shamsul Islam inspected the observation systems, storm tracking networks, and emergency alert units. A detailed military statement confirmed that the visit aimed to boost disaster readiness.
The adviser emphasised that precise tracking is much more than a simple technical exercise. Instead, it serves as a critical foundation for regional economic stability, safe river transport, and national food security.
The wording of severe weather warnings received particular focus. The adviser noted that emergency bulletins must reach the most distant rural areas quickly, using simple language that ordinary citizens can easily interpret.
The agency was urged to adapt rapidly, given that shifting global weather patterns have triggered an increase in lightning strikes, heavy monsoon downpours, seasonal heatwaves, and unexpected river flooding.
Senior meteorologists walked the state visitor through the current process of gathering regional field data. Staff explained how specific forecast updates are drafted using modern satellite tools before being sent to the public.
To support this evolution, the defence chief instructed managers to explore wider mobile-based alert services and to install advanced earthquake tracking equipment across the nation.
The drive to achieve international standards will require enhanced training schemes and strong inter-agency partnerships. The state aims to connect weather experts closely with media networks, phone providers, and rescue workers.
The inspection concluded with a comprehensive tour of the specialised storm warning centres, agricultural research facilities, and climate laboratories. The defence ministry secretary and the chairman of the Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation were also present during the visit.
