The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday began cataloguing assets at a house owned by dismissed Major General Ziaul Ahsan in the Jalshiri Housing Project as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of illicit wealth.
An ACC team led by Deputy Director Md Hafizul Islam carried out the operation at the property in Rupganj, Narayanganj. ACC spokesperson Tanzir Ahmed said officials were documenting both movable and immovable assets and preparing a detailed inventory that could be used as evidence in the investigation.
According to the ACC, the operation forms part of its inquiry into allegations that Ziaul accumulated wealth beyond his known sources of income. Officials are recording all items found at the property and collecting relevant information for the investigation.
The raid comes a day after the anti-graft agency conducted a court-ordered inventory at two Gulshan flats owned by former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury. During that operation, officials catalogued 300 coats, 532 ties, eight luxury watch boxes, including four Rolex boxes, three sets of pearl jewellery, four chandeliers, a bed, a sofa and 100 sets of kameez as part of an investigation into alleged illicit wealth.
Ziaul was shown arrested on 7 January in a case filed by the ACC over allegations that he acquired assets beyond his known sources of income.
According to the case statement, investigators allege he accumulated Tk22.27 crore in unexplained assets, deposited US$55,000 above the permitted limit and conducted suspicious transactions worth about Tk120 crore through eight bank accounts.
The ACC also alleges that, with the assistance of his wife, Nusrat Jahan, he transferred and concealed the funds through the bank accounts of various individuals and organisations.
The case further alleges that he abused his official position and authority, committing offences under the ACC Act, the Penal Code, the Money Laundering Prevention Act and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Ziaul most recently served as director general of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC). He was dismissed on 6 August 2024 following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.
On 16 August 2024, he was arrested in Dhaka's Khilkhet area and later shown to be arrested in a murder case filed with New Market Police Station over incidents during the July Uprising. He has remained in custody since then.
