Former army officer Mozzafar Hossain, who was recently arrested in connection with the assassination of former President Ziaur Rahman, is now set to face proceedings before Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in a separate case involving alleged crimes against humanity.
According to tribunal sources, prosecutors have filed a petition seeking permission to show Mozzafar arrested in the ICT case.
The tribunal is expected to hear the application on Tuesday.
Mozzafar was detained last Thursday, more than four decades after the killing of Ziaur Rahman. Investigators said, "The arrest followed information obtained from a conversation involving former military officer Masud Uddin Chowdhury.”
Following his arrest, Mozzafar was taken to the location where the former president was assassinated as part of the investigation.
Earlier, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said, "Those accused in the Ziaur Rahman assassination case would be tried before a military court.”
However, prosecutors have since confirmed that separate legal proceedings are being pursued before the International Crimes Tribunal.
They said, "Preparations have been completed to seek Mozzafar’s arrest in connection with allegations of crimes against humanity.”
The prosecution also confirmed that a formal investigation into those allegations is already under way.
The tribunal’s decision on the prosecution’s application is expected following Tuesday’s hearing.
