Three members of a family, including an eight-year-old child, have suffered critical burn injuries after a suspected gas leak triggered an explosion inside a house in Dhaka’s Bhatara area in the early hours of Tuesday.
The blast took place at a residence on the 100 Feet Road in Notun Bazar, within the jurisdiction of Bhatara Police Station. Emergency responders rushed the injured family members to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery at around 6:00 am, where they were admitted for specialist treatment.
The victims have been identified as Md Shaheen, 24, his wife Fahima Akter, 21, and their eight-year-old niece, Hafsa.
According to a relative, Shaheen, who works at a local shop, lived with his family on the ground floor of a six-storey residential building. The family had been asleep when an apparent gas leak led to a powerful explosion, igniting a fire inside the home.
Hospital officials said all three patients sustained extensive burn injuries.
Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident doctor at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said Shaheen suffered burns covering around 50 per cent of his body. Fahima sustained burns to approximately 45 per cent of her body, while Hafsa suffered injuries affecting around 40 per cent.
He said the condition of all three patients remains critical, and they are receiving treatment under close observation in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The cause of the suspected gas leak has not yet been officially confirmed, and the circumstances surrounding the explosion are expected to be investigated. The incident once again highlights concerns over gas safety in residential buildings across Dhaka.
