The High Court has granted bail to former Habiganj-4 Member of Parliament Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman in an attempted murder case filed with Chunarughat Police Station, marking another legal development in a series of cases brought against the former lawmaker.

The order was passed on Wednesday by a High Court bench comprising Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Justice Md Zakir Hossain, which made absolute an earlier rule, clearing the way for Suman’s release in the case.

Barrister M Liton Ahmed represented the defence during the hearing, while Deputy Attorney General Md Isa appeared for the state.

Speaking after the hearing, Liton said the court’s decision means Suman has now secured bail in the attempted murder case filed on 16 July 2024.

He added that the former MP had spent around 21 months in custody before obtaining relief in the matter.

According to the defence lawyer, Suman is facing a total of seven criminal cases.

He said one case, an attempted murder case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station, has already completed all legal proceedings, including those before the Appellate Division.

With the latest High Court order, two cases have now reached a similar stage, while four others, filed with Khilgaon, Mugda, Adabor and other police stations, are still awaiting rule hearings before the High Court.

Liton also expressed his personal opinion that extensive media reporting on bail orders can sometimes affect later legal proceedings, potentially delaying a defendant’s release. The court did not comment on that observation.

Earlier this year, on 7 April, a Habiganj court rejected Suman’s bail application in a case linked to violence during the anti-discrimination student movement. After he was produced before Habiganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Md Kamrul Islam, the court refused bail and ordered that he remain in custody.

Court documents state that the case relates to an attack on students near the Shayestaganj New Bridge roundabout in Chunarughat Upazila during the 2024 protests. The case, filed on 11 September 2024, named Suman and 97 other accused, along with around 200 unidentified individuals.

Suman was arrested in Dhaka in the early hours of 21 October 2024 in connection with an attempted murder case registered with Mirpur Model Police Station. Legal proceedings in the remaining cases against him are continuing.
