Outgoing Navy chief meets PM at Secretariat

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman met the outgoing Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral M Nazmul Hassan, to discuss Bangladesh’s maritime security, national sovereignty and the continued development of the country’s navy.

The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office at the Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon, where both sides also exchanged views on a range of issues linked to national interests.

According to officials, the prime minister commended Admiral Hassan for his leadership during his tenure, highlighting his role in advancing the modernisation of the Bangladesh Navy and strengthening its operational capabilities.

He also recognised the admiral’s contribution to maintaining the force as a professional and capable maritime service.

Admiral Hassan thanked the prime minister for his guidance, cooperation and continued support throughout his time as the country’s naval chief.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Rahman hosted a luncheon in honour of the outgoing naval commander.

Admiral Hassan assumed office as Chief of Naval Staff on 24 July 2023, having joined the Bangladesh Navy on 1 July 1986.

During a career spanning nearly four decades, he served in a wide range of operational, instructional and senior staff appointments.

His previous responsibilities included serving as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff for Operations and Personnel, Director of Naval Operations and Naval Intelligence, and Director General of the Directorate General of Civil-Military Liaison at the Armed Forces Division.

He also commanded four naval vessels during his career, including the Bangladesh Navy’s training ship, BNS Umar Farooq.

The meeting comes as Bangladesh continues efforts to strengthen its maritime security framework and enhance the operational readiness of its naval forces amid evolving regional and strategic challenges.
