Local residents held a protest procession and public rally in Shyamnagar upazila on Wednesday, demanding the resignation and party expulsion of Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam following the release of a viral video.
Organised under the banner of Conscious Citizens of Shyamnagar, the demonstration began around midday. Marchers paraded along the main roads of the upazila before gathering outside the local Press Club, where protesters burnt an effigy of the politician.
Local political representatives and community leaders addressed the crowd during the rally, calling for swift disciplinary action from both Parliament and his political party, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Former upazila convener Solaiman Kabir and former vice-president Professor Abu Sayeed were among the speakers who voiced strong criticism over the incident.
Addressing the gathering, the speakers stated that the conduct of the Member of Parliament had brought dishonour to the constituency, declaring that he was no longer welcome in Shyamnagar.
National Women's Organisation upazila unit president Nurjahan Parvin Jharna and local union parishad chairmen Masudul Alam and Amzadul Islam also joined calls for formal organisational measures and his removal from his legislative seat.
The public outrage follows the appearance of video footage on social media on Monday evening, which appeared to show Gazi Nazrul Islam in an intimate setting with a young woman at a property in the Moghbazar district of Dhaka.
Responding to the widespread reaction, Gazi Nazrul Islam issued a public statement on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon, maintaining that the woman in the video is his second wife, Mariam Begum.
The Member of Parliament stated that the couple had married during a private family ceremony on 17 June. However, his explanation regarding the marriage has continued to draw scrutiny and debate among local constituents.
