Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the government has no knowledge of any plan by President Mohammed Shahabuddin to resign, seeking to downplay growing speculation over the issue.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, the minister described reports suggesting the president could step down as speculation rather than an established development.
“Rumours are rumours. If it becomes an actual event, we will see,” Salahuddin said when asked about media reports concerning the president's future.
When reporters noted that the matter had already been widely reported by news organisations, the minister declined to comment further on the speculation, saying that journalists should seek clarification directly from the president.
The comments come as questions have emerged over the president's position, although the presidency has not made any official announcement.
Salahuddin stated, “Bangladesh’s Constitution provides a legal mechanism for a president to resign if they choose to do so.”
“The president can resign constitutionally. There are options, whether for health reasons or any other reason,” he added.
Despite acknowledging that the Constitution permits such a step, the home minister stressed that the government had received no indication that President Shahabuddin intended to resign.
His remarks leave the government’s official position unchanged, with authorities maintaining that they have no information to support reports suggesting an imminent resignation by the head of state.
Until any formal announcement is made, the government continues to treat the reports as unconfirmed speculation.
