The Bangladesh government has ordered the retirement of 17 senior officers from the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) police cadre, invoking Section 45 of the Government Service Act, 2018.
On Wednesday, the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a gazette notification announcing the decision.
The notification, signed by Senior Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Chowdhury on behalf of the President, said the order had been made in the public interest and would take effect immediately.
According to the notification, the officers concerned will receive all retirement benefits in line with the existing government rules.
Among those affected by the decision are Highway Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mohammad Ataur Rabbi; Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Additional DIG Mohammad Saifar Hossain; Tourist Police Additional DIG Bidhan Tripura; Police Telecom Additional DIG Dr AKM Iqbal Hossain; and Bangladesh Police Academy, Sardah DIG Md Wali Hossain.
The list also includes Armed Police Battalion (APBn) Additional DIG Shahed Ferdous; CID Additional DIG Rebeka Sultana; Bangladesh Police Academy, Sardah Additional DIG Mohammad Tarak Uddin; Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Md Habibur Rahman; and Police Telecom Additional DIG Hasina Begum.
Other officers named in the notification are Police Headquarters Additional DIG Faisal Mahmud, Police Headquarters Additional DIG Kamik Farzana, Tourist Police Additional DIG Rakunuzzaman Nazma Hossain, Naval Police Additional DIG KM Benazir, TIM Dhaka Superintendent of Police Abu Rumman Md Touhid, CID DIG Nana Shamim Rehman and Dhaka Metropolitan Police Joint Commissioner (Additional DIG) Md Faria Yasmin.
The government has not provided any further explanation for the retirements beyond stating that the measure was taken under the provisions of the Government Service Act and in the public interest. The notification confirmed that the order became effective immediately.
