The United Nations General Assembly has adopted Bangladesh’s flagship resolution on the Follow-up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, reaffirming the global commitment to dialogue, tolerance, solidarity and peaceful coexistence.
The resolution, first introduced by Bangladesh in 1999, remains the United Nations’ principal framework for promoting a culture of peace and encouraging international cooperation to prevent conflict.
Presenting the resolution before the General Assembly, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, said, 'Lasting peace depends on inclusive societies built on dialogue, mutual understanding and respect for diversity.’
He stressed that strengthening peaceful and resilient communities also requires continued adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter.
According to a press release issued on Saturday, the ambassador thanked member states for their broad support and constructive engagement during the adoption process.
He urged the international community to renew its commitment to cooperation, calling for dialogue instead of division, partnership instead of confrontation, and understanding in place of intolerance.
The resolution promotes respect for diversity, non-violence, tolerance and solidarity as essential values for achieving sustainable peace. It also supports international efforts to prevent conflict, encourage peaceful coexistence and reinforce multilateral cooperation among nations.
Bangladesh has played a leading role in advancing the culture of peace agenda since launching the initiative more than two decades ago.
Its continued adoption by the General Assembly reflects ongoing international support for peaceful dialogue and collective action in addressing global challenges.
The latest endorsement comes at a time when many parts of the world continue to face conflict and instability, highlighting the relevance of initiatives aimed at strengthening trust, cooperation and inclusive development through peaceful means.
