The government has allowed Ad-din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar, Dhaka, to reopen after it was shut down over the tragic deaths of six newborn babies.
Health Services Division Secretary Kamruzzaman Chowdhury signed an official letter on Monday giving the hospital its licence back. The licence was originally cancelled on 11 June by the health department after an investigation into the incident.
To stay open, the hospital must follow three strict rules set by the government:
· Follow Private Clinic Laws: The hospital must fully follow all official government rules made for private clinics and hospitals.
· Hire Enough Staff: It must quickly hire enough doctors and nurses to look after patients.
· Risk Final Closure: If the hospital breaks any of these rules, the government can take legal action or close it down again immediately.
The hospital’s lawyer, Advocate Shishir Monir, confirmed that the facility has received its licence back.
The hospital was originally closed after six newborn babies died in a special ward on the morning of 27 May. A government probe found that overcrowding, broken air conditioning, and poor ventilation led to a harmful build-up of toxic air, which caused the babies to suffocate.
After losing its licence, the hospital resolved its safety issues and asked the government for another chance, leading to this conditional approval.
