Bangladesh and Japan have agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation across infrastructure development, transport system modernisation, and the expansion of mass transit networks, including metro rail services.
The understanding was established during a courtesy meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Special Adviser Uno Yoshimasa and Road Transport and Bridges, Shipping and Railways Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam at the Secretariat in Dhaka.
During the session, Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam expressed gratitude for Japan's long-standing support as a key international development partner in upgrading national transport links.
The minister noted that Japanese technical expertise and funding remain essential as Bangladesh works to construct modern, safe, and environmentally sustainable urban transit systems.
Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam highlighted that the government is implementing long-term strategic plans to modernise public transport. He added that continued collaboration with Tokyo would help create an integrated transit framework tailored to public needs.
Special Adviser Uno Yoshimasa emphasised that developing modern mass transit infrastructure is critical to support the rapid urbanisation and economic growth seen across Bangladesh in recent years.
The Japanese envoy confirmed that Tokyo is prepared to deploy its technical expertise more extensively. He reaffirmed that Japan will maintain close cooperation across metro rail expansion, railway connectivity, and highway infrastructure projects.
The meeting was also attended by Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary Dr Mohammad Ziaul Haque and Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Company Limited Managing Director Md Shawgatul Alam.
