Commonwealth delegation meets Jamaat-e-Islami leaders

A visiting Commonwealth delegation led by Linford Andrews, advisor of the 'Electoral Support' wing and Head of the 'Pre- Election Assessment' Mission, held a meeting with the leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at its central office in the capital's Moghbazar area Wednesday morning.

The Commonwealth delegation also included Dr Dinusha Panditaratne, Nancy Kanyago, Sarthak Roy and Madonna Lynch.

During the discussion, both sides exchanged views on the upcoming national elections in Bangladesh, the consolidation of democracy, strengthening of constitutional and democratic institutions and the progress towards holding free, fair and participatory elections.

Issues related to creating a level playing field and maintaining law and order during the election were also discussed.

The delegation informed that a Commonwealth Observer Team will visit Bangladesh during the forthcoming national polls.

From Jamaat-e-Islami, the meeting was attended, among others, by Naib-e-Ameer and former MP Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar, Assistant Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum, Central Executive Committee Member and Secretary of the Central Publicity and Media Wing Advocate Matiur Rahman Akanda and Central Executive Committee Members Saiful Alam Khan Milon and Mobarak Hossain.
