BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said that the upcoming national election might be the final one of his political career, recalling decades of personal sacrifice and struggle in the party’s service.

“This election might be my last election. By the grace of the Almighty Allah, the BNP has nominated me for the Thakurgaon-1 constituency. I express my gratitude and thanks to Begum Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman and all the leaders. I extend my sincere thanks to all the party workers for staying with me throughout my life,” Fakhrul wrote in a heartfelt Facebook post.

Fakhrul reflected on the challenges he faced since returning to politics in 1987. “Those of us who have dedicated our lives to politics, who have been to jail, we all have our own stories! Many people don’t know them. When I decided to return to politics in 1987, my two daughters were very young. They were studying in Dhaka. My wife was quite young. She was stunned at first. She understood the terribly uncertain life we were stepping into.”

He recounted the sacrifices of his family, saying, “She (my wife) was the one who took my two daughters to school and to the doctor. I remember, when my elder daughter was going to have an operation, I was in a car all night, on the road to Dhaka, so that I could be by my daughter’s side. I will tell the stories another day, God willing! Thousands of our party activists and leaders have similar stories.”

Urging support and prayers from the public, Fakhrul added, “I request everyone to pray for me and for every leader and activist of our party. We will all work together and stand by you, Insha’Allah! The BNP has the capacity to lead the country forward with dignity. Insha’Allah! Please stand by us.”

The BNP recently announced its primary list of candidates for 237 constituencies, confirming Fakhrul’s nomination for Thakurgaon-1.
