BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Thursday accused Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus of violating the July National Charter by including provisions beyond its agreed terms in his televised address to the nation.
“The Chief Adviser himself signed the July Charter. In his speech, he violated the charter by adding new elements not part of the signed document,” Salahuddin said, reacting to Prof Yunus’ address. “If we compare his speech with the signed charter, it’s clear he has grossly breached it. That’s all I want to say for now,” he added.
BNP Calls Emergency Standing Committee Meeting
Following Salahuddin’s remarks, the BNP announced an urgent Standing Committee meeting to discuss the issue. The meeting, convened by Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, is scheduled for 7:00pm Thursday at the party Chairperson’s office in Gulshan.
Yunus Announces Election and Referendum on Same Day
Earlier on Thursday, Prof Yunus said that the national election and the referendum on the July Charter would be held simultaneously. In his address, he stated that the Council of Advisers had approved the July National Charter (Constitution Amendment) Implementation Order, 2025. “To implement the July Charter, this order includes several key measures, including a referendum on the proposed constitutional amendments and the formation of a Constitution Reform Council,” he said.
BNP Welcomes Decision, Raises Concerns
A senior BNP leader said the party welcomes the decision to hold both the election and referendum on the same day, but remains concerned about the implementation order and the referendum’s structure. He said the Standing Committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, will review the matter in detail and decide on the BNP’s next course of action.
