BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged people to remain united so that the sacrifices of those killed during the July uprising are not undermined by political differences.
Speaking on Tuesday at the National Press Club in Dhaka, Mr Fakhrul stated that the "victory of the mass uprising must be preserved," adding that while differences of opinion may arise, the martyrs' sacrifice should not be wasted.
He was the keynote speaker at the book launch event for Professor Dr Mahbub Ullah and his wife, Salma Alo.
According to Mr Fakhrul, Dr Mahbub Ullah's writings consistently focused on ordinary people—including farmers and labourers—and argued for social change and a just and equitable society. He clarified that the academic's work was not motivated by personal gain.
He also claimed that BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia frequently sought Dr Mahbub Ullah's advice during major political discussions and that his thinking influenced several key ideas behind the party's Vision 2030, such as proposals for political, constitutional, and economic reform.
Mr Fakhrul stated that the professor was involved in national politics, including the BNP's 2022 simultaneous movement, political platform formation, and election participation.
He concluded by stating that Dr Mahbub Ullah dedicated his life to building a democratic and non-discriminatory Bangladesh, with his books advocating for ordinary people's rights, freedom, and social justice.
