Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman travelled to Evercare Hospital on Thursday to visit his mother and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, following a brief public appearance on the July 36 Expressway, also known as the 300-Foot Road.

Tarique Rahman earlier received a formal welcome upon his arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka after returning from London, where he had lived in exile for nearly 17 years.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir led senior party leaders in greeting Tarique Rahman at the airport’s VVIP lounge. He was accompanied by his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, and their daughter, Zaima Rahman.

After completing airport formalities, Rahman travelled by bus to the Expressway venue under tight security. Large crowds lined the route from the airport to the venue, waving national flags and party symbols and chanting slogans as his motorcade passed.

Following the brief event, Tarique Rahman proceeded to Evercare Hospital to spend time with his mother, who has been receiving medical treatment there.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Md Shafiqur Rahman said the aircraft carrying Rahman and his family landed in Dhaka at around 11:40am after a stopover at Sylhet’s Osmani International Airport.

The flight had departed London’s Heathrow Airport on Wednesday evening.

Tarique Rahman’s return marks his first visit to Bangladesh since leaving the country in 2008.
