Senior National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Dr Tasnim Jara has resigned from the party and announced plans to contest the upcoming national election as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-9 constituency.
In a message sent on Saturday to the NCP’s central WhatsApp group, Jara said she had stepped down from her position as senior joint member secretary.
“I have resigned from the party,” she wrote. “I have learned a great deal from you over the past one and a half years, for which I am sincerely grateful. I wish you all the very best.”
Earlier, Jara made the announcement public in a post on her verified Facebook page, addressing residents of Khilgaon, Sabujbagh and Mugda — areas that make up the Dhaka-9 constituency.
She said she had been born and raised in Khilgaon and had initially hoped to enter parliament under the banner of a political party in order to serve her constituency and the country.
“However, considering the practical realities, I have decided not to contest the election as a candidate of any particular party or alliance,” she wrote.
Jara said she remained committed to her pledge to help build a new political culture and would pursue that goal by contesting the election independently.
“I promised you and the people of the country that I would fight for you and work to establish a new political culture,” she said. “Regardless of the circumstances, I am determined to keep that promise.”
She acknowledged that candidates backed by political parties typically benefit from organisational support, local offices and easier access to government and administrative channels, including on security matters.
“As I am not affiliated with any party, I will not have those advantages,” she said, adding that her campaign would rely on public support.
“My only hope is you,” she wrote. “If you support me based on my honesty, dedication and determination to practise new politics, only then will I have the opportunity to serve you.”
There was no immediate comment from the National Citizen Party regarding her resignation.
