Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party (NCP) is set to contest the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election as part of a political alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami, party officials have said on Saturday.

The alliance is expected to be formally announced on Sunday.

NCP Senior Joint Convener Samantha Sharmin confirmed the development late on Saturday, saying the decision to join forces with Jamaat had been finalised.

“The NCP is going into an alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. The announcement will be made on Sunday,” she said.

The move comes amid internal debate within the NCP over the prospect of forming an alliance with Jamaat, particularly given the party’s earlier commitment to contest the election independently in all 300 constituencies.

The announcement also follows the resignation of NCP Senior Joint Member Secretary Dr Tasnim Jara, who stepped down from the party on Saturday and declared her intention to contest the election as an independent candidate.

In a statement posted on social media, Jara said she had decided not to run under the banner of any political party or alliance, citing practical considerations and a desire to promote what she described as a new political culture.

Political analysts say the Jamaat–NCP alliance could reshape electoral dynamics in several constituencies, while also posing challenges for the NCP in managing internal dissent and maintaining support among centrist voters.

Neither Jamaat-e-Islami nor the NCP has yet disclosed details of any seat-sharing arrangement or the scope of their cooperation.

The 13th National Parliamentary Election is expected to be held in the coming months, with parties accelerating alliance-building and candidate selection ahead of the polls.
