Former interim government adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has formally joined the National Citizen Party (NCP) and will take on the role of the party’s spokesperson, NCP leaders have announced.

NCP Convener Nahid Islam confirmed the development at a press conference in Dhaka’s Banglamotor area on Monday, saying the appointment was made in line with a decision of the party’s political council.

“Asif Mahmud will assume responsibility as the spokesperson of the NCP with immediate effect,” Nahid said.

Asif Mahmud had earlier resigned his post as adviser to the interim government, where he oversaw the local government, rural development, and cooperative portfolio. At the time, he indicated an intention to contest the upcoming national parliamentary election.

However, party officials said he would not be standing as a candidate in the election.

Before joining the NCP leadership, Asif Mahmud had collected nomination papers to contest from the Dhaka-10 constituency. Separately, supporters also collected nomination papers on his behalf from the Cumilla-3 constituency.

NCP leaders said his decision to step away from the electoral contest reflects a strategic choice to focus on organisational and communication responsibilities within the party.

Political analysts say the move could strengthen the NCP’s public messaging as the party seeks to expand its profile ahead of the election.

There was no immediate comment from Asif Mahmud regarding his earlier plans to run for office.
