Veteran politician and Gonoforum Emeritus President Dr Kamal Hossain has been admitted to a private hospital in Dhaka after falling seriously ill, party officials have said.
In a statement issued on Friday, Gonoforum confirmed that Dr Hossain was taken to Square Hospital earlier in the day, where he is currently receiving treatment.
According to the party, the 87-year-old leader has been suffering from severe physical weakness and lung-related complications. Hospital sources said he has been placed under close medical observation, with doctors prioritising the management of his respiratory condition.
Medical teams are focusing on stabilising his breathing, restoring his physical strength and preventing possible infections, the statement added.
Dr Hossain, a senior advocate and constitutional expert, has played a prominent role in Bangladesh’s political history and is widely regarded as a key figure in the country’s democratic movements. He served as foreign minister after independence and later became a leading voice in opposition politics.
There was no immediate update on the duration of his hospital stay, and party officials said further information would be shared as his condition progresses.
Supporters and well-wishers from across the political spectrum have expressed concern over his health and have offered prayers for his recovery.
Hospital authorities have not released additional details about his condition, citing patient confidentiality.
