Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has expressed profound gratitude to the people of Bangladesh and to the international community for the widespread condolences and support shown following the death of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, as a three-day period of national mourning concluded.

In a statement published on his verified Facebook page on Saturday, Tarique Rahman said his family had been deeply moved by the prayers, messages and gestures of solidarity received from across the country and from friends abroad during the mourning period.

He said the collective expressions of grief had revealed the far-reaching and diverse impact of Begum Khaleda Zia’s life and political career. According to Tarique Rahman, the mourning period highlighted how his mother meant different things to different people, often in ways that went beyond her family’s own understanding.

For many, he said, Begum Khaleda Zia symbolised the courage to stand by one’s principles in the face of adversity — a message that resonated beyond party politics and ideological divides.

Tarique Rahman offered special thanks to the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, praising its leadership and swift coordination in arranging what he described as an honourable and dignified farewell within a short period of time. He said his family remained “eternally thankful” to Professor Muhammad Yunus and his Cabinet for their role in ensuring the arrangements were carried out respectfully.

He also acknowledged the support shown by the international community, expressing appreciation for foreign dignitaries, diplomats and friends who attended the funeral or sent letters and messages of condolence. He said the presence and solidarity of Bangladesh’s global partners had been a source of comfort to the family.

Paying tribute to members of the state and security services, Tarique Rahman expressed particular gratitude to the President Guard Regiment, whose guard of honour and final salute, he said, paid the highest tribute to Begum Khaleda Zia’s life and service to the nation. He also thanked administrators and service members for their sense of duty and care in ensuring a dignified final journey for the former Prime Minister.

Recognising the efforts of many individuals who worked beyond public view, Tarique Rahman extended heartfelt thanks to all those who contributed behind the scenes. He said their collective efforts made it possible for both the family and the nation to honour Begum Khaleda Zia’s memory with dignity.

Addressing the people of Bangladesh directly, he said the sight of mourners gathering from every corner of the country in reverence had been deeply moving and unexpected, describing it as a powerful moment of national unity and shared remembrance.

On behalf of his family and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Tarique Rahman concluded by thanking everyone who stood with them in grief and solidarity, saying the compassion shown during the mourning period would remain a lasting source of strength and gratitude.
