Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said his party remains firmly committed to establishing a liberal democratic system in Bangladesh, describing it as a continuation of the vision set out by the party’s founder, former president Ziaur Rahman.
Mirza Fakhrul made the comments on Monday after paying floral tributes at Ziaur Rahman’s mausoleum in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, marking the former president’s 90th birth anniversary. Speaking to journalists, he said BNP leaders and supporters renew their pledge every year to follow the political path laid out by Ziaur Rahman.
He said Ziaur Rahman’s role in Bangladesh’s history continues to shape the country’s political direction. According to Mirza Fakhrul, Ziaur Rahman proclaimed the country’s independence and later introduced democracy and a multi-party-political system, while also ensuring freedom of the press and the independence of the judiciary.
“These steps helped guide the nation towards prosperity,” he said, adding that BNP and its allied organisations remain committed to implementing what he described as Ziaur Rahman’s ideals.
Turning to the upcoming national election scheduled for February 12, Mirza Fakhrul said BNP aims to help rebuild the country’s economy and strengthen democratic institutions following recent political unrest. He said the party, along with its affiliated organisations, has taken an oath to work collectively towards that goal.
On the election process, the BNP secretary general expressed confidence in the Election Commission. He acknowledged that there had been concerns during the commission’s formation but said it had so far appeared capable of carrying out its duties.
“The issues that BNP has noticed have been placed before the commission,” he said, adding that the party believes the election body will be able to conduct the polls properly.
Several senior BNP leaders were present at the programme, including Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, along with Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon.
