Alexander Grigoryevich Khozin, Russia’s ambassador to Bangladesh, met with Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairman Tarique Rahman on Tuesday as part of his ongoing diplomatic engagement with the country’s major political stakeholders.
The courtesy call took place about lunchtime in Tarique Rahman’s political office, according to Shairul Kabir Khan, a BNP media cell member. The meeting was regarded as pleasant, with both parties exchanging greetings and discussing subjects of common interest.
According to party officials, discussions centred on the current condition of bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Russia, as well as the potential to increase collaboration in a variety of industries. There was no other information provided concerning the topic of the discussions.
Several senior BNP figures attended the meeting, including Humayun Kabir, Joint Secretary General and member of the party chairman’s Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee; Mahadi Amin, Advisory Council member; Rashedul Haque, International Affairs Secretary; and Saleh Shibli, chairman’s press secretary.
Tarique Rahman, the BNP’s acting chairman, remains a key figure in the party’s electoral strategy and global outreach. The BNP, one of Bangladesh’s main political parties, has boosted its contact with foreign diplomats in recent months as the country approaches the next national election.
Russia and Bangladesh have had diplomatic relations for over five decades, collaborating in areas such as energy, infrastructure, and defence. Moscow has been involved in a number of key development projects in Bangladesh, most notably the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, which is being developed with Russian technical and financial support.
Meetings between foreign envoys and leaders of major political parties are frequent, according to diplomats, and are part of broader efforts to maintain conversation across Bangladesh’s political spectrum, particularly during moments of increased political activity.
Neither the Russian embassy nor the BNP specified whether any additional engagements are scheduled following Tuesday’s meeting.
